With New York’s fashion week about to come to its glamorous close, what better time to round-up Manhattan’s five most stylish places to stay? And while we doubt you’ll get a room in any of the beautiful places listed below this week, thanks to their rooms being crammed full with journalists, models, make-up artists, designers, fashion bloggers and their hanger-on entourages, there’s no harm in planning a trip once the fashionista set have moved out and on.
1. Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC
While we enjoyed our stay at the Meatpacking District’s Gansevoort property (see our review here), we did find its look a little prescriptive and safe. We think, however, that the hotel group have nailed the design of their latest hotel, which sits pretty on Park Avenue and the corner of 29th. With its indoor/outdoor heated pool and tri-level bar (already a hot-spot for events organisers) and 249 rooms, the property is all about downtown cool meeting uptown luxe.
2. The Standard
Andre Balazs, hotelier extraordinaire, has created a glossy tower of beauty looming over Manhattan’s über-cool Meatpacking District. Sexy, witty, gorgeous and with some of the best views that New York has to offer (and boy, does this city know how to do views), bag a room as sky-high and if you can bear to leave your room, be sure to borrow one of the hotel’s bikes so you can explore at street-level.
3. Gramercy Park Hotel
Still, arguably, one of the hottest tickets in town, GPH will be attracting fashion’s demi-gods to its rooms this week, despite rumours that this Ian Schrager property is struggling to fill its rooms. We love the location, the eclectic (and verging-on-whacky) interiors and the exclusive access to New York’s only private park.
4. Crosby Street Hotel
Firmdale Hotels‘ first foray into Manhattan has wowed New Yorkers with its Brit cool and clever mix of classic versus modern décor. Our favourite spot is the residents-only leafy courtyard – perfect for a glass of something bubbly after a mammoth SoHo shopping spree. Be sure to bag a few of the exclusive Miller Harris bathroom products, created especially for this New York outpost from the Firmdale collection.
5. Ace Hotel
For something a little kinder on your Comme des Garcons wallet, head to the super-hip Ace Hotel with its graffiti-inspired interiors, Gibson guitars in the rooms and even in-room decks for wannabe-DJs. It’s also the new home of Brit chef April Bloomfield, so be sure to take in lunch while you’re there.
